The Power of Coaching?

Coaching always focuses on a measurable outcome. In the coaching process you set up a well-formed outcome or an end result that you can see/hear/feel and measure. The coach then becomes a friend and facilitator that help you to attain that outcome.

Coaching has for instance been shown to have the capacity to improve different aspects of any business by as much as 60 to 80 percent. Its power is mostly felt in goal setting and systems development, as well as in change management and resources management.

A coaching intervention would elevate what is working well in a business to new levels. It would also change what is average to superior; and transform what is mediocre to excellence. Coaching is therefore about performance enhancement and transformation.

Statement One

No matter the personal status of an individual or the state of any business, there lie ahead, much bigger dreams to live out, and greater heights to attain, as long as the knowledge is accessible.

Implication of Statement One

The implication of this statement is that an understanding and apprehending of present and future greatness would compel a person to conceive bigger dreams to bring to birth and greater goals to achieve. This is what is called Inspiration and separates true achievers from wishful thinkers and daydreamers.

Statement Two

Every individual person and business or organisation has the potential to succeed, if provided the right internal and external environment for the unlocking of their potentials.

Implication of Statement Two

The implication of this statement is that people and businesses have inherent abilities, which are impacted by the two factors of environment. The first is the internal environment, which is what they may usually have control over, while the external environment is the area over which little control can be exerted. The internal environment thus becomes known and identified as the Sphere/Circle of Influence.

CIRCLES OF INFLUENCE & CONCERN

The external environment, to which little or no control can be exerted over a sustainable period of time evidently, becomes identified as the Circle of Concern.

The power of coaching is demonstrated by the tying together of these two statements of fact to bring about sustainable development as follows:

  1. Coaching inspires and empowers an individual to become more aware of his or her potentials. It thus facilitates transformational change and performance enhancement through capacity building.
  1. Coaching supports the development of practical abilities to adapt to, and exploit the internal and external factors for sustainable impact.

The concept and context of personal, business, team and executive coaching, among others simply is that the solutions belong in the minds and hands of the client and never that of the coach.

It therefore confers on the individual the responsibility and accountability for the setting of goals and the eventual evidence of the desired change(s) that compelled the coaching process.

Coaching and Change Inspirations

The almost limitless application of coaching in every spectrum of life, work, spirituality, culture, and others is linked to its fundamental principle of inspiration.

Research reveals that change in any form, phase or place is dependent on what inspires the change.

Because inspiration is from within, it is driven more by a heart-felt passion, and therefore is more sustainable than change that is imposed from outside. This is the same with goal achievement. It is often said that change and goal achievement would require 90% inspiration and 10% perspiration from a person.
